Learning a new language easy or difficult

In my opinion, learning a new language as an adult is no easy task. It demands discipline, hard work, consistency and perseverance. I started learning Spanish about a year ago. At the time, I did it for fun. I didn’t focus on it and I wasn’t consistent. I mainly used Duolingo with which I practised for no more than five minutes daily. For whatever reason, I carried on for months on end doing exactly the same things. I suppose, I was able to do this simply because it didn’t require too much from me in terms of effort.

But, somewhere along the way, I realised I had carried on for too long to simply quit and move on with my life. I had spent many hours of my life learning this exotic language that it seemed like such a waist to just walk away. I knew I had to carry on and more seriously this time if anything was to come of it. It is at this point that things started to get a bit difficult. I needed to learn new words on a daily basis all the while carrying on with my daily responsibilities. I know over a thousand Spanish words by now and I am struggling to understand the rules of grammar that I need to master in order to correctly express myself. It is at this stage that I remain to date, in spite of a few months of rather serious work. I keep working, I keep persevering hoping that I will eventually bear the fruits that I seek.

I am choosing to remain hopeful in spite of the circumstances that from time to time make it seem like I have a mountain Everest to climb if I am to get to near fluency. Here is to hoping and dreaming.

Yours Sincerely

Dickson
